As one of many Australians that want to see him come home, thank you. Assange’s role in this world should be viewed as “keeping the bastards honest”. If the powers that be have a problem with that they need to spend time in front of a mirror. Integrity, Truth and Justice shouldn’t be ideals reserved for Marvel films.

That is amazing. Thank you Professor Mearsheimer.

The persecution of Julian Assange is a visceral example of the length monsters will go to scare or destroy one of us who refuses to be servant to corrupt power.

We cannot live in a world where most of us think that the only option is to turn the other cheek or bury our eyes in the sand of the false reality created for us.

If you share that belief, then realise that the terrible things done to Julian are happening to us, and are war crimes against our better future.

We are all Julian Assange!

I do not think Assange went light on Putin, but the NY Times does and their opinions are expressed below.

In the past they have more or less thought of Assange as Putin's puppet, that is, while critical of the US, not so much with Russia, and it seems the NY Times agrees. What else would the NY times believe?

New York Times, Aug,2016 "But a New York Times examination of WikiLeaks’ activities during Mr. Assange’s years in exile found a different pattern: Whether by conviction, convenience or coincidence, WikiLeaks’ document releases, along with many of Mr. Assange’s statements, have often benefited Russia, at the expense of the West."

No doubt that is why we're persistent in wanting to punish him, and now with Navalny dead and Putin accused of the crime that will add fuel to America's loathsome hate for this man. They also suggest he helped Trump win. Yikes.

Literally anything that is critical of government can also be seen as "pro Putin". If we continue on the current path, it will soon become illegal to criticize government no matter how harmful the government becomes to the citizens who fund it.

If you read my post, I am not voicing my opinion but no doubt the main reason the US has gone after Assange with no mercy. NOT MY OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes of course! It was clear you were explaining some of the eagerness in mainstream circles to allow this atrocity to continue. What a bunch of amoral people though. Don't get on the wrong side of people with no morals, is the moral of THIS story.

I don't believe that Putin would've killed Navalny as the victory at Adeevka was about to become Russia's true propaganda campaign. He wouldn't have wanted the West to distract from that, and Navalny was already nullified via imprisonment.

Expand full comment

I don't either. The US blames Putin, of course, and Assange is accused on going light on Putin, so if anyone killed him we did, and made it look like a Putin hit. Actually that makes more sense.

It would be logical but I'm not prepared to jump without proof. It's better to go with the simplest explanation which is that Navalny was ill, and his body gave in with good timing for the West.

Expand full comment

I didn't read anything that said he was ill, but your right, wait and see. However Biden already said Putin did him in. He was 71 and in jail, and could have died from a heart attack. Here's the headline from NPR "Alexei Navalny is the latest Putin critic to die in suspicious circumstances" It makes news, no matter the consequences, and his death is used by others to further their own agenda, and that includes media that also wants to have a piece of the action.

Putin's critics sometimes die, that's true, but it doesn't mean it applies to Navalny.

Expand full comment

I didn't say he did, but our president who can't find his way off a stage said, and I quote, "No doubt' Vladimir Putin to blame for Navalny's death"

If you read my response your response is beyond me because I in no way justify what they are doing to Assange. Nor do I, or have I ever supported America's wars. It is absolutely bizarre that you should interpret my post as being pro war, or anti-Assanage.

Apology excepted. I have been a supporter of Assange from the beginning and very active in the anti-war movement in the US until it died a rather fast death.

Thank you for speaking up on Julian Assange and all the lunatic west policy towards Russia, and all those who are dead or destroyed by it.

Professor, this was an excellent presentation for the High Court and the public. It had just the right tone, clarified the complete lack of legal standing of US authorities, noted the highly selective nature of the vindictive persecution, and placed a proper frame around the motives of the shadowy actors. I am proud of you and your representation for true American fair play and Justice. Thank you. May your words call forth the better angels in the High Court and reverberate in the Court of Heaven. You speak for millions of people across the world sir!

I don't see Mr Assange going free, although I hope he does. The West needs a snbolic punishment for us to see and be afraid of

The best we can hope for is that he doesn't wind up in a torture chamber.

Goliath doesn’t want misguided mayhem to see the light of day. Not a coincidence that Putin’s political nemesis was taken out now. The gullibles must remain in the Gulag of misinformation, deception and distraction.

Thanks for trying , Dr. M but I'll be very surprised if it does any good. I'd bet my bottom dollar that the Brits will hand him over and then, after a fair trial - we'll put him away for a loooong time.

Yes, but that doesn’t minimize or discount any effort to push back! If you don’t push back, NOTHING will I

Yeah, that's true.

It is amazing to me that so many people who grew up admiring Daniel Ellsberg have a completely opposite view when it comes to Assange. The mentality of fear and addiction to foreign conflict has caused our elites to throw our most fundamental Constitutional principles in the trashcan.
