As many of my followers surely know, I have a significant problem with people posting fake AI videos of me on the internet, some of which are so good that people who know me well do not realize they are watching a fake.
Yes I was fooled for a few minutes until I heard the slurring of Venezuela. Foreign words were a giveaway. You also said odd things in an odd rhythm. It will only get more insidious. Literally putting words in your mouth. Very dangerous. Great interview with Chris Hedges. He was accused of being a doom monger for years, it's gratifying (and alarming) to see his predictions come true. Keep up the great work sir!
The problem might evolve into not being able to Trust here on Substack.
A possible verification system os likely available via AI open source / transparent code that gets checked regularly.
As an aside, If Trump was Israel's puppet then 100,000+ US Military would be targets in Iran already and the price of Oil causing worldwide recessions for importing countries

This is military grade war PSYOP technolgy and it was given to the populace for a reason: to unleash all out chaos so no one can no longer discern what is true, so that the controlled military who released it can then sweep in and sieze control as the "solution".
It looks to me though they might intentionally do that to those who are not aligned with the approved narrative. Not sure how much is to create chaos but to control their voice.
YouTube has become a garbage platform now. They are more concerned with censoring and banning anyone that criticizes Israel and Zionism than they are with anything else. Rumble, BitChute and Odysee are the way to go. That doesn't solve the YouTube AI problem, but it does provide an alternative.
This gives new meaning to the idea that "I contain multitudes."
In all seriousness, this is deeply distressing. AI, artificial intelligence, is now very effective at creating artificial people. It's opening an unbrave new world of manipulation and malfeasance.
It's unsettling to say the least to be exploited in this way. To see an image of yourself being twisted, saying things you would never say.
More than anything, it generates more distrust, more uneasiness, more skepticism, so much so that more and more people will just disengage. And you can't have a democracy where nearly everyone is disengaged or otherwise disgusted or disenchanted.
All I can say is: Good Luck. This was inevitable- just one of potentially many sneaky ways of muddying the waters so people will not be able to grasp the serious issues that you address in your work. So far, it has been easy for me to spot the Fake Mearsheimers. The bad news is: the fakers are bound to learn from their mistakes, and get better at it.
I have personally reported 50+ of your deepfakes to YouTube. I think one way you can battle this on YouTube is to make an official channel and link it to your Substack.
I always leave a “fake ai vid” in the comments on those. Some people are really mad about you enlightening others I guess. Keep up the great work professor❤️
The same problem is faced by Paul Krugman, Heather Cox Richardson, the late Richard Feynman (audio only fakery), etc.
Every time I come across one of these I leave a comment to warn others who are clearly taken in and I report it to YouTube, which promises to get back to me with the results of their investigation, and they never do.
You should register yourself as a trademark and only appear with a button with an (R). Any misuse of the trademark (Intellectual Property) "Mersheimer" would be punished! -especially by Google :-)
I encountered this problem about three weeks ago. I quickly figured out that the image of you was a fake. AI hasn’t figured out how to make their fakes less robotic, less “ doll like”) . The audio is also a dead give away for those of us whose listening skills are highly developed( eg. musicians) .I urge all of your followers to report these to You Tube every time you encounter them. I usually click onto legit sites( Katie Halper, Greyzone
, Piers Morgan, Judge Napolitano etc) when you are their featured guest. What a whacky and scary world we live in…sick- making to be sure.
I agree with you. My intention was to state that when John is on Morgan’s You Tube show , I trust I am viewing the “ real” John. As for Morgan himself, I find him to be an oleaginous fraud and a vile opportunist. His early stand on the Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza is unforgivable. As he seesaws back and forth, he solidifies his utter lack of moral decency. However, when John is on his show, I will watch just to witness John’s total evisceration of his arguments. I hope this clarifies my position and the gross misuse of the word “ legit”

I have followed Professor John's work for many years and very quickly realised what were deep fakes on YouTube. May I suggest that placing the official channel on YouTube would be a win for Google. I know that the interviews with Glenn Greenwald on Rumble are authentic. Perhaps it would be best that Professor John places his official channel on Rumble.
I saw one of the fakes, and for a few minutes I was following along, until I began noticing inconsistencies. I have read a few of JM's books and have heard perhaps 50 podcasts with him, and so had enough experience to know the difference. After realizing it, I continued to observe the video and noticed subtle glichiness in both JM's movements and speech, like things were being patched in.
Incredible that this now is all possible. Perhaps these types of counterfeits will soon be used to broadcast speeches from our leaders. Or to make it look like leaders of other countries say such things which could validate the state's interest in attacking said countries.
