I respect John and appreciate his knowledgeable talks but it’s incredibly disappointing he refuses to acknowledge that Israel is indeed committing a genocide on the Palestinian people. I don’t think there’s anything to “be careful” about when using that language, because by definition, it is a genocide.
I realize time is limited, perhaps in another session it would be relevant to touch on the importance of the ME to China. For example China receives a major amount of fuel from Iran, and has significant recent investments in Saudi Arabia including a reciprocal currency swap arrangement.
As for Russia, it sees a significant problem in a possible Israeli gas cartel. For if Israel manages to destroy Gaza it will claim the Gaza off shore gas fields, build its planned canal to rival Suez, build high rises in Gaza (the plans already exist) as well as its high speed railroad. The Israeli plan is to make Israel a major gas hub serving the EU as well as a major harbor and trade zone. Now do you see why Lebanon's port next door had that unfortunate "explosion" in a warehouse?
Given all these factors, as well as Israel not being able to balance the books and about to lose its ability to borrow, plus Bibi fearing jail, do you see Israel stopping? Probably not. Why would they? For who will step up to the plate and stop them. My guess, no one.
Re. Israel's finances, I was surprised there was no mention of the famous Leviathan gas fields that Israel will gain control over if it takes over Gaza. That's a huge factor and deserves a mention.
Yep. And make sure to add the planned canal and highspeed rail both terminating in Gaza. Plus Bibi facing jail and Israeli credit rating hitting the wall because of mismanaged govt funds under Bibi.
Listen... I disagree with your stance regarding genocide. When one kill mostly women and children, you kill the future... It is a genocide.
I can understand that you have to take gloves due maybe to your position but... More than 14 000 people, civilians as you say has been murdered... Be fair...
Yes and under international law, if you kill civilians during a war and they have no way to evade you, nowhere to go, that is legally genocide. Now you see why Israel is trying so hard to get Egypt, Jordan, the US to take Gaza citizens.
From the dictionary - "The deliberate killing or severe mistreatment of a large number of people from a particular national or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group."
The intent to destroy the ethnic group is a critical component of the word. It derives from "genos", which is "a social group claiming common descent".
I don't take a stance on the conflict, but it strikes me that if Israel we trying to commit genocide they wouldn't have dropped leaflets asking people to move to the south along delineated corridors. They would have simply bombed the whole strip into oblivion, which they have the firepower to do.
When the U.S. dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we killed mostly women and children. But we didn't attempt to kill all Japanese.
Politically, we like to use the word genocide because it is powerful and we wish to score linguistic points to persuade others.
But using it hyperbolically dilutes its power in much the same way that those that call any criticism of Israel "anti-Semetic" water that term down.
Respectfully, why would a brochure with words saying basically, "run" to people who have; nowhere really to run to, who you have deprived of food, water, electricity, gas, access to medicine, access to the sea. And who when they do flee you then bomb their cars, absolve any nation from responsibility for their deaths?? This is classic genocide.
On your reference to WW2 bombing of Japan, the Japanese had already surrendered, the only outstanding issue was the Emperor staying in as a symbolic head of the govt. The US did it, not to defeat the Japanese, but to intimidate Russia who was moving in on Japan's islands, there was no legitimate reason to bomb the two cities, NONE. It was and is a war crime, as is the fire bombing of Dresden.
Sorry, but today's Napolitano's Show is biased to such an extend that embarrasses me and I suppose many other listeners. Hear statements from Xi and Putin admonishing Israel's alleged genocide makes me sick to death. Not a good company, John, this judge is out of control. Following this "woke" line of discussion, a very poor one, you'll never understand why so many centered people is voting extra right parties in Europe. (Excuse my English, being a Catalan speaker).
Yes, yes, yes, a lot of discussion, a lot of noise... but at the end of the day you stay with China, Russia, Iran, Africa, Latin America etc... or you stay with anglosaxon countries. All them lie, but i stand with 'my liers'. I rely more on Israel than on Hamas, a ocean more!
Mearsheimer is knowledgable, but also a shill for US thuggery. Like Scott Ritter he’s making s fortune out of these tragedies.
This IS another US war.

Wonderful discussion, thank you!

Every day with Meatsheimer is like a fistival of lets double down on wron! At least he is not a huckster (looking at you, Peter Zeihan).

It is important to listen to your friends, many feel it is perhaps even more important to listen to your enemies.
