Lol this is just kabuki. Israel is helpless without American support. Cut them off.

Charles Dart's avatar

Trump could apply real leverage, withhold aid and stop Israel’s murderous rampage. He doesn’t because he doesn’t want to stop it.

Any Person's avatar

I don't think Trump has the foggiest notion what's going on. If it's true he's raging at NuttyYahoo, it's not because he feels 'in control' of events past, present or future.

Charles Dart's avatar

Lol words are meaningless. Only action will rein in the Israeli golum. Trump gnashes his teeth, shows the world his impotence. Everyone including Trumps knows that Bibi is in charge. Trump is a dancing chimp.

Fran's avatar

You don't substantiate your pronouncement, that is, Trump doesn't want the war to stop without explanation. So what do you think his response to Netanyahu was all Kabuki theater?

Charles Dart's avatar

Because if Trump wanted to stop Bibi’s relentless bombing of civilian areas he has the leverage to do it. He doesn’t use the leverage. Therefore, he doesn’t want to stop Bibi.

This leak was kabuki for optical purposes. Nothing will change.

Fran's avatar

Well, it seems Mearsheimer genuinely believes Trump just might end this, since he has little choice. I believe his perspective that the world economy will greatly suffer is a reality. I am also sure Trump is being warned by many on this very issue. I think you're coming from a place that adopts a black and white perspective when it comes to Trump.

GG's avatar

Trump does chicken out from time to time. He backed down on some of his tariffs. This could be a much more serious matter.

Frances Lynch's avatar

Dear John, I am a great admirer of yours but I must say, "Baloney."

You will notice that the same publication that hypes the White House's almost daily market manipulations is the rag that published this story. So I repeat, "Baloney."

The chances this actually happened is zero.

UPDATE: trup has now said he did have this call. I still doubt the call actually happened, I think it is an effort by Trump and his minions to appear "tough." But there is now a possibility it did, so based on that possibiity I retract my Baloney observation.

GG's avatar

The Israelis will soon find out that Trump is not Cyrus, he is Caligula and also something of a Golem. Elon Musk got burned by him, so will Nuttyyahu.

Lononaut's avatar

But this one feels different than the usual psy-op. Rumor going around that if Netanyahu costs the GOP the November elections, then USA military will ass*ssi*nate him, then blame Yemen, then remove Yemeni capacity while winding down in Iran. Why winding down? To focus on Cuba.

Frances Lynch's avatar

Yet that sounds more like wishful thinking than a plan. Something Lindsey might sprout off after a pink lady or two.

Killing Bibi woulld automaticaly unleash Mossad on all even remotely involved, besides the damage will have been done.

And the person(s) responsible for the GOP rush to the bottom is Trump and the GOP. Yes, they are doing what Bibi wants, but Trump and his AIPAC funded goons are the ones doing his bidding.

As for removing Yemen, they tried that, and failed. If they try again Iran will vigorously defend Yemen, and no armada can stand up to a rain of missiles for long, as they run out of defensive weapons.

As for Cuba, maybe, but other than Rubio wanting revenge, does it really matter, the blockade seems to be sufficient.

I think they are more likely to go snatch someone else in South America as part of the Israeli ordered Issac Accords that Trump is pushing. down South American throats

Lononaut's avatar

You overestimate Moss*d—remember Lillehammer? And how’s that Iron Dome invincibility working out? Having political influence in USA is impressive but many countries have managed it with much less publicity. What does that tell you about Moss*d’s actual skills?

Frances Lynch's avatar

One botched assassination in 1973 doesn't reflect their abilities today. And the Iron Dome is an outdated security setup of their military, not Mossad.

Mossad's exploding pagers is one ugly example of their current methods. And to think they don't have other similar setups in the US would be naive.

Fran's avatar

Are you saying Mearsheimer picked up this rag, or another rag sheet. and adopted his political perspective from reading this rag sheet, or some other rag sheet?

Frances Lynch's avatar

John's political perspective is well documented, his career is long and highly regarded as is John himself.

Taking this story as valid doesn't alter his views that I can tell. I do know that it was first and solely reported by a rag.

Fran's avatar
Jun 3Edited

Well, you dismiss his perspective because the same story was published in what you called a rag sheet. So??????????????????

Frances Lynch's avatar

Not his overall perspective which I share and value, I dismiss his source for this story.

Fran's avatar

Well, maybe you're right Israel continues to bomb Lebanon, and I have no doubt Netanyahu won't stop. No ceasefire is really on their radar. Sometimes I think it's the end times. I guess the prospects are so bad l don't want to see it. However I do like his Mearsheimer's optimism. Chris Hedges, whom I like, but he is always on the down side of this, like it's the end times. I can't stand it anymore.

Ruth's avatar

Thanks Professor Mearsheimer for your analysis. "All of this shows what a huge strategic liability Israel is for the US." Some of us in Australia have been saying this since the commencement of Israel's genocide in Gaza. When will our governments wake up?

Exactly what points of Iran's repeatedly stated points are 'negotiable'? Trumpty Dumbdy can swear at NuttyYahoo all he wants, the only remaining exit is clear:

Iran’s most recent peace framework is a 14-point proposal transmitted on May 10, 2026, which reiterates the demands of its earlier May 2 14-point framework and previous 10-point plan.

The key demands include:

Resolution within 30 days: Iran insists all issues be resolved immediately, rejecting the US proposal for a two-month interim ceasefire.

Sovereignty and Security: Full Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz under a "new mechanism," US troop withdrawal from Iran’s periphery, and guarantees against future military aggression.

Economic Relief: Lifting of all OFAC sanctions on Iranian oil, removal of the US naval blockade, unfreezing of frozen Iranian assets, and payment of war reparations for damage suffered.

Regional Ceasefire: A permanent end to hostilities on all fronts, including an end to the conflict in Lebanon involving Hezbollah.

The 'nuclear' issue is not on the table at all, Escobar and Johnson's sources claiming Iran already has a nuke notwithstanding.

Either Trumpty Dumbdy and NuttyYahoo agree to AND IMPLEMENT those terms, or the war continues. The Genocidal Apartheid State of Israel in Occupied Palestine cannot withstand another sustained, full-on missile/drone assault. Iran has also said if the BS "ceasefire that isn't" games don't stop soon, the attacks will resume and won't stop until the surrender papers are signed.

YANKEE GO HOME! The world has only been saying that for 80 years. Or 100 if you consider WW1 as well.

Enough already. Midterms are coming... I predicted weeks ago that the Republican 'brain trust' would realize their chances of winning any seats drop to nearly zero if Trump stays and continues his idiocy. 25th Amendment or Impeachment, either will immediately raise GOP midterm prospects. Assuming whoever is plopped in the Oval Office meets Iran and Russia's requirements to stop those wars.

Gnuneo's avatar

The problem is the demonrats wouldn't be behaving any differently. So it's all very well "Trumpists" losing, because those who will replace them - unless they are Greens/Indies - will quietly continue on the same course.

After all, most of the biggest Demonrat "donors" [owners] are also in the Epstein files, same as Repugs.

Two things, the President is attempting to appear tough and he needs a scapegoat. Second, the issue with global oil buffers running dry is serious enough for the US to push for any deal as quickly as possible with Iran. There is no reason for Israel to halt its expansion unless the oil crisis is real. At the end of the day US foreign policy incompetence shines brightly.

Frances Lynch's avatar

Why would they care if it is real, how would it affect them, we supply the money after all.

Inty2525's avatar

The “spice” must flow. It’s the lifeblood of our dollar hegemony. Israel is heavily dependent on US hegemony for its survival.

GG's avatar

This is true. This is what happens when you elect Caligula. He is mostly right about southern border security though. I will give him credit for that.

Anthony Pacenza's avatar

Wait, "absent a serious chance of that (the global economy tanking) happening"? We've been hearing that this was just around the corner for the last 3 months.

Any Person's avatar

I think people are still labouring under the delusion that the US/EU is still foundational to the 'global economy'. Russia and China have greatly mitigated any factors that would collapse their symbiotic economies, plus they will support those of BRICS+ and any other sane countries.

The US and Europe may find themselves alone, out on the limb they are busy sawing from the 'global economy' trunk.

There’s no need for Trump to bomb Netanyahu and his war party , Trump could simply withdraw all financial and military aid for Israel until it agrees to the Iranian Peace offer. This does not require the approval of Congress - just an executive order . Please don’t confuse sanity with antisemitism .

• The State Department Conflict: Truman’s own foreign policy establishment—most notably Secretary of State George Marshall—strongly opposed the partition of Palestine. They argued that recognizing a Jewish state would alienate Arab nations, endanger American access to oil, and potentially drive Arab countries toward the Soviet Union. [1

• The 1948 Election: Historians frequently point out that Truman faced an incredibly difficult re-election campaign in 1948. His advisors constantly reminded him that the "Jewish vote" and domestic political support were critical to his path to victory.

Ultimately, despite fierce opposition from his own cabinet, Truman bypassed the State Department and granted de facto U.S. recognition to Israel on May 14, 1948, just 11 minutes after it declared independence. For more on the internal White House battles surrounding this decision, you can explore the archives at the Harry S. Truman Library or read historical analyses provided by the Journal of Palestine Studies.

When megalomaniacs are running the world the only thing important to them are themselves. Deluded, desperation leaves these cretinous individuals with no sense of the harm they do the only goal is preservation of their alliance - this macabre dance of death needs to stop. The systems that are in place supporting this undertaking are also the problem - there needs to be an easier way to pull the plug when your leader/s are expressing genocidal, murderous behavior in front of the world on a daily basis with no plan to end this engagement. Rationality has gone out the window and we have been reduced to barbarism - only the total decimation of Israel will end this insanity. Israel is a death cult- believing they take precedence over everyone else in the world, that their existence takes precedence over everything and everyone else. Empowering them further is a war crime on the part of the US. When will sanity again prevail?
